In July, I wrote about the growing role of public relations in AI search. The premise was straightforward. As more buyers use AI to research technology companies, earned media and other credible third-party signals help AI systems understand who a company is, what it does, and why it matters.
That shift has marketers asking how they can intentionally build a PR program for this new discovery environment. The answer isn’t to abandon traditional PR or SEO. It’s to connect PR with Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) to build the authority, credibility, and context that can influence how companies appear in AI search.
Start With the Questions You Want to Own
Traditional PR often starts by asking, What narrative do we want to create?
PR for AI search raises another consideration: What questions do we want our company and executives associated with?
That means identifying the topics, problems, categories, and buyer queries that matter most, then building communications around them. If a company wants to lead a category, simply repeating a set of phrases isn’t enough. Executives need to consistently contribute substantive perspectives about the problems, trends, and decisions surrounding that category.
Build an Authority Ecosystem
This requires moving beyond isolated announcements toward a sustained body of authoritative and meaningful content.
PR is central to this ecosystem because it creates something that owned content cannot – independent validation. Earned media in credible business and trade publications can reinforce a company’s expertise, positioning, and relevance beyond its own channels. Executive thought leadership and contributed articles deepen that expertise by answering important questions for target audiences.
From there, platforms such as Medium can extend those ideas into additional searchable environments. LinkedIn creates another layer of executive authority and engagement, while relevant industry communities can add authentic discussion around the questions buyers are asking.
The objective is consistency, not simple duplication. A strategic point of view should appear naturally across multiple credible channels and formats, with earned media providing third-party authority that strengthens the broader AEO effort.
Five Steps to Put PR + AEO Into Motion
- Identify your priority AI queries – Define the 10 to 20 questions where your company should be part of the AI-generated answer.
- Establish a baseline – Run those queries across leading AI platforms. Document whether your company appears, how it is described, which competitors surface, and what sources are cited.
- Map your authority gaps – Identify where your company lacks credible third-party coverage, expert perspectives, customer proof, or authoritative content around the topics you want to own.
- Build a PR-led authority cadence – Develop earned media opportunities and executive thought leadership around priority topics, then reinforce that authority through contributed content, social channels, customer proof points, and relevant community participation.
- Measure, learn, and optimize – Track changes in AI visibility and citations alongside traditional PR metrics. Use those insights to continually refine media strategy, thought leadership, content, and executive positioning.
Measure What AI Sees
Media coverage, share of voice, and engagement remain important indicators, but PR measurement is evolving. Companies should also monitor how they appear in AI-generated answers, which sources influence those answers, and how their visibility compares with competitors’.
Those insights create a continuous loop of identifying the questions, building third-party authority around them, measuring AI visibility, and refining the approach.
AI search isn’t diminishing the importance of PR. It’s expanding its role. As discovery shifts from search results to AI-generated answers, credible third-party validation becomes an increasingly important part of how companies establish authority.
The opportunity is to stop thinking about PR, SEO, and AEO as separate disciplines. AEO can help companies understand where they need to be visible. PR helps build the authority that gives them a reason to be there.
As AI search reshapes how buyers discover companies, PR and AEO need to work together to build visibility and authority. Reach out if you want to talk through what that could look like for your brand.
